Semicolons:

Semicolons do two primary things when they aren't being used poetically. 1) They divide items in a list where some of those items include commas, and 2) they IMPLY A RELATIONSHIP between two independent clauses.
I do not believe the rules for using semi-colons are hard and fast, as evidenced by the much-admired quote above. But, in essays, I highly suggest that you use them as an absolute last resort. Many readers balk at their appearance.
This is the question I ask myself: "Will a semicolon imply a relationship between these two things that will be EASY TO SEE WITH THE SEMICOLON, BUT DIFFICULT TO SEE WITHOUT IT?"Comma splices and independent clauses:
This gets way more complicated than is worth keeping track of, but a super simplified rule of thumb is this: A comma can divide two halves of a simple sentence when: WITHOUT THE COMMA, ONE OR THE OTHER HALF WOULD FAIL TO STAND ON ITS OWN. ^that's not the most gorgeous sentence in the world, but the comma is alright, because "a place I'd never been before" is, by itself, only a fragment. It could not stand on its own as a complete sentence.
